The bridge is dedicated to San Giovanni Grisostromo, whose church is located in the square adjacent to the bridge

However, locals call it Ponte dei Giocattoli (bridge of toys) because a toy store used to be located on it, serving as a popular landmark for the city’s children. The store was closed in the early 2000s, however, reflecting the city’s increasing “tourism” focus, with commerce now limited almost exclusively to the sale of masks and other souvenirs.
